Broadly speaking, the entire population of Ias contains traces of the ancient Rab'ka, an originally nomadic tribe (based on what is now Lakash) that overwhelmed the entire continent. However, each nation was subsumed in The Rab'ka Invasions to varying degrees.
Accordingly, nations such as Pfwillic and Shens speak a language only influenced by Rab'ka and do not consider themselves ethnically to be Rab'ka. On the other hand, Rok Sakul, Therem Sakul, and of course Lakash consider themselves to be pure bastions of the ancient Rab'ka blood and traditions. Menza, owing perhaps to its form of government, claims that Menzan is an entirely different ethnic group and indeed race, but the language of Menza bears remarkable likeness to that of the Rab'ka. The same is said for the Union of Holma, although this nation is not as strident in their opposition to Rab'ka identity.
Ias was the first continent on the planet to possess human civilization, and indeed there are signs of human habitation in the southwest corner of the continent which indicate settled life has been a feature of the area for roughly 10,000 years.
As Ias has been inhabited for the longest time, so it has the longest history. Many civilizations have come and gone in this timespan, all contributing a great deal to the modern cultures of the continent.
The founding myth of Ias and his son Ianos is a common mythological thread which connects most of the civilizations on Ias, and elsewhere. On the continent of Aremi, for instance, the Raak tribal group has a creation myth that involves "Yosh" and "Yanosh", which is linguistically related to "Ias" and "Ianos".
At present, the continent is divided into seven major nation-states:
